flat3d project

Introduction

A project to model the flat I am currently living in, in 3d rendered images using "Art of Illusion" (a raytracing program).

The final movie

Version nine is now available : 5Mb good quality MOV format or 2.5Mb lower quality AVI format. This is as far as I currently anticipate going with this project.

The overview

The hard work

The progress in chronological order...:
First the walls were created, to scale of course. The textures were not correct yet.

A plant (not quite to scale yet, slightly too large) was added:

A bookcase, cupboards, buffet, and kitchen unit were added initially as full-wood elements. A glass-top table was created. The ceiling lamps were modelled.

Next, the correct texture for the wooden floor was obtained. A carpet, some doorknobs and some chairs were added.

Finally, the buffet and kitchen sink elements were further enhanced. A bed (not visible in image, see movie) was added.

Rendering choices

Rendering with Monte Carlo illumination would have given far better results:

but that image took around three hours to render. With suitable illumination, a "good enough" image was obtained in under two minutes rendering time:

For individual images, rendering times are allowed to be long, but for movies with 180 frames (in this case) keeping the rendering time to a minimum is always better.

Data file

The source data file (version 9) is here for you to play with if you wish (AoI format).
